What is the BMW E30 convertible folding top trim covering?

It is the black plastic cover that sits at the front of the folding top's lifting mechanism, on the left and right side of the E30 cabriolet. It hides the mechanism and the edge of the soft top, and protects both from water and damage. BMW lists it as 51431945355 (left) and 51431945356 (right); other sellers call it the roof hinge cover, flip-up cap or top opening hatch.

Why do E30 cabrio folding top trim covers break?

The original is thin injection-moulded plastic that becomes brittle after 30+ years of sun, heat and rain. Because the cover sits directly on the roof mechanism, it is loaded every time the top is opened or closed, and it fails at the hinge and mounting points. Most E30 convertibles today have one cracked or missing.

Are 51431945355 and 51431945356 still available from BMW?

No — both are discontinued, and good used pairs are scarce and expensive because the same parts are broken on nearly every car. This SLS 3D printed Nylon 12 pair is a new replacement in factory-style grained black, reinforced at the points where the original cracks.

Which E30 models and years does the trim cover fit?

It fits the factory BMW E30 convertible (cabriolet), built 1985–1993, including the 318i and 325i cabrio. You get one left and one right cover per order. The Baur TC2 top-cabriolet uses a different roof design and does not take this part.
